A few hours ago, former Kogi Lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye came out on social media to share a video of ex-President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo reacting to claims that he never allowed his Vice, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to take the reigns of power in an acting capacity while he was away from the country.

Recall that some days ago, during an interview on CHANNELS TV, the campaign spokesman for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Festus Keyamo had taken a swipe at the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, claiming that his ability to serve in a leadership capacity had not yet been tested.

*** Liar: Festus Keyamo (SAN).

To buttress his point, Keyamo had claimed that throughout the time Atiku served as Vice President of the country, his principal, Obasanjo, never handed power to him in an acting capacity.

Quite interestingly, Keyamo’s remarks did not go down well with PDP campaign spokesman, Senator Dino Melaye who took to his Facebook page to share a video of Chief Obasanjo debunking such claims.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, has this to say below.

In the footage, OBJ is heard describing the claim as “most ridiculous” while speaking at an event back in 2019.

“Let me now say this, one of the most ridiculous claims I have heard is that I did not give Atiku a chance to preside over the Federal Executive Council because I did not trust him. That’s not true. That was not correct because he had to preside over a few times that I was out of the country on duty.

On those occasions, he was in charge of Federal Executive Council meetings, and no Nigerian Chief Executive has devolved to his deputy as much as I did to Atiku. I did not need to designate him as acting president because the constitution is clear. Once the president is not available, the vice president automatically acts with full power, and can only carry out consultations if he deems it necessary,” OBJ said.
