In a shocking turn of events, the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday, October 22, 2023. The attack occurred just a few kilometers away from Abuja as the Governor was en route to an official engagement from Lokoja.
The assailants, disguised in military uniforms, ambushed the Governor’s convoy, unleashing a hail of bullets at his vehicle and other vehicles in the convoy. However, thanks to the swift response and bravery of the security personnel attached to the Governor, the dastardly plan of the unknown soldiers was foiled.
This brazen attack unfolded in three stages, the final one taking place near Kwali in the Federal Capital Territory around 4.20 pm. The Kogi State Government has taken swift action, reporting the incident and all relevant details to security offices at both the state and national levels. A thorough investigation is already underway to prevent any future occurrences.
In a press release, the Kogi State Government questioned the motives behind this senseless act, suggesting a possible politically motivated scheme to destabilize the state ahead of the upcoming Governorship Poll, scheduled for November 11, 2023. The government reassured citizens that it will spare no efforts in ensuring safety for its people, particularly as politicians resort to desperate measures to gain power.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, urged the public to maintain vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. Emphasizing that maintaining security is the responsibility of the government, Fanwo emphasized that the state would not allow violent politics to undermine the peace it has enjoyed over the past eight years.
The attempted assassination of Governor Yahaya Bello serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers that can lurk within the political arena. As the investigation unfolds, Kogi State prepares to rise against those who seek to undermine its progress, vowing to protect the peaceful coexistence it has cultivated.
