Isanlu rainstorm disaster: Kogi Assembly lawmakers appeals to SEMA, NEMA for interventions

In view of the rain storm that wrecked havoc on Isanlu town in Yagba East Local Government Area last Sunday, the Kogi State House of Assembly has called on the State Emergency Management Agency ( SEMA) to carry out an on the spot assessment to determine the extent of the devastation and position relief materials to the affected victims.

The Assembly made the call during the house plenary held in Lokoja on Tuesday.

It was also resolved by the House that the National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA), National Social Investment Program ( NSIP) and Kogi State Social Investment Program ( KOSIP) be urged to send relief materials and other supports to the victims of the rainstorm.

Also the House resolved that the Standing Committee of the House on Environment be mandated to visit the affected Isanlu Community and others so affected for on the spot assessment and report back it’s observations and recommendations .

Earlier Hon. Emmanuel Obaro who represents Yagba East state constituency in Kogi State House of Assembly had informed the House in a matter of urgent public importance that Isanlu community witnessed a devastating and ruinous misfortune occasioned by heavy rainfall mottled with storm.

According to him, many roofs were blown off, houses were destroyed and farm lands drained off by the volumes of the rain water as well as many families displaced.

He pleaded with the House through prayers on the need to assist the affected households who are largely low income earners and would find it difficult to overcome their plights.

“We don’t need to be told the pictorial evidence are there in Isanlu because the damage of the rainstorm was massive. Hundreds of my people were displaced and property worth million of naira destroyed. Most of the building are condemned. We need both State and federal government intervention for my people to bring life back in Isanlu”he lamented

Seconding the motion, the member representing Igalamela Odolu state constituency Hon Major Enefola expressed sympathy towards the plight of Isanlu people on the natural disasters.

Adding his voice, the member representing Bassa State Constituency Hon Sunday Daku , hinted the house that his constituency was also affected two weeks ago with same natural disaster.

He also requested that the government assist Bassa and Isanlu community as well as other communities that have been affected by the natural disasters.

The Speaker of the house of Assembly RT Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf called in his rulings mandated the house standing committee on environment to visit the affected communities for on the spot-assessment and report back it observation and recommendations.

He urged the people of the affected communities to be patient as efforts are in place to ensure proactive steps in the recovering of lost property.
