***vows to rise above exclusion from National Youth Games
The leadership of the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation (NBSF) has expressed deep disappointment over the exclusion of baseball and softball from this year’s National Youth Games Festival, scheduled to take place in Asaba, Delta State.
In a press release issued by the President of the NBSF, Mr. Uche Odozor, the federation stated that their teams had fulfilled all requirements for participation, including successful completion of the regional elimination series, and were initially enlisted for the Games. However, administrative and political challenges at the local level led to their exclusion, as baseball and softball were not listed on the final registration portal.
The NBSF acknowledged the support received from the National Sports Commission (NSC) and expressed gratitude for their efforts in trying to overcome the obstacles faced in Delta State.
Despite the setback, the NBSF remains committed to the growth of baseball and softball in Nigeria. They highlighted several initiatives in motion, including a three-year Baseball Leadership Program approved by the Government of Japan, an international exchange program with Kisarazu Baseball City in Japan, and a USA-sponsored youth baseball initiative.
Furthermore, the NBSF announced plans to integrate baseball and softball into all Federal Unity Schools nationwide and to feature the sports as a demonstration game at the upcoming Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA).
While disappointed by their exclusion from this year’s National Youth Games, the NBSF expressed determination to work with all stakeholders to ensure that baseball and softball have a place in future editions of the event.
