Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom Hosts Inaugural Cultural Festival, Calls for Preservation of African Heritage

***Speaks passionately about preserving African culture and calls for support towards the development of a cultural center in the kingdom

Iyara, Ijumu Local Government – In a grand display of rich cultural heritage, His Royal Majesty, Oba (DR.) Williams Olusegun Ayeni, the Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom, welcomed distinguished guests to the historic maiden edition of the Ijumu Cultural Festival held on November 4th, 2023. Bringing together sons and daughters of the kingdom, the festival aimed to revive and celebrate the cultural essence of Ijumu.

Expressing his heartfelt appreciation to all who honored the invitation, the Olujumu showed gratitude towards esteemed guests who had shown immense love for the kingdom and its flourishing cultural legacy. His message resonated with the crowd gathered in Iyara, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government.

In his address, His Royal Majesty thanked everyone for their unwavering support in restoring the cultural glory of the kingdom, a dream come true for him and the traditional rulers who shared the same aspiration. Through the festival, they aimed to promote the culture and foster unity among the sons, daughters, and communities of Ijumu.

Acknowledging the presence of distinguished royal guests, the Olujumu extended his appreciation to the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Mohammed Oloyede Gbadamosi (Okikiola Ajagungbade1, Esuwoye II) and his entourage, as well as the Obaro of Kabba, Chairman Okun Traditional Council, HRM Oba (Dr.) Solomon Dele Owoniyi, and all other royal fathers of Ijumu Kingdom.

Highlighting the urgent need to protect African culture from extinction due to Western influences mistakenly identified as civilization, the Olujumu emphasized the significance of the festival and the subsequent initiatives undertaken by the Ijumu Traditional Council. It is their collective endeavor to showcase the cultural richness of Ijumu to the world, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

In a call-to-action, His Royal Majesty appealed to the philanthropic spirit of all attendees to generously donate towards the targeted ₦250 million naira fund raised for the development of a palace building. This monumental structure will serve as a cultural hub, encompassing a museum, a church, a mosque, an auditorium, as well as inviting spaces such as parks and gardens.

Gratitude was also extended towards His Excellency Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the local government Chairman, Hon Taofiq Isa, and all other government officials present for their steadfast commitment to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

The Olujumu concluded his address by offering prayers for prosperity in the coming year, invoking a sense of hope and unity among all attendees.

With the successful inaugural Ijumu Cultural Festival setting a precedent for future celebrations, it is clear that the Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom’s vision to revive, restore, and protect the cultural roots of the community is now well underway.
