A common Yoruba phrase goes, ‘Ran ti omo eni ti iwo se’. Remember the son of whom you are!
This piece of wisdom had numerous meanings in Yoruba families. Our parents had a knack of telling us to conduct ourselves but also instilling in us love and passion for doing the right thing. This affirmation served as a reminder and admonition to conduct properly and stay in line.
It was a word spoken usually when they were not around to guide you. For example: “as you go now to the School or a new place of work, don’t get there and bend under peer pressure, “remember the son or daughter of whom you are”. There was a great deal of etiquette back then. Unfortunately, the reverse is true now. The younger ones are not prepared to follow the process. All they want is to live the life they want.
In today’s world, every young man wants to “blow” without going through the proper steps. You can observe them engaged in unhealthy activities, rituals, cyber crime, stealing, and so on. They have no mentors or are most likely mentees of unknown mentors who set a terrible example in society.
Not everything that glitters is gold. Not every wealthy person is legitimate in their endeavours. Stop attempting to run other people’s races. There is a time and season for everyone.
All you have to do is recognise your strength, be creative, consistent, believe in yourself, try something new to develop yourself, never strive to run faster than your shadow, believe in the process, and slow and steady wins the race.
Remember that action and reaction are equal and opposing. If you sacrifice your peace of mind and future for transient fame today, you will lose everything tomorrow and live in shame and sorrow for the rest of your life.
Everything is transient, even our lives. It’s important to trust the process and exercise caution. Avoid anything that will disrupt your peace of mind.
Every young man reading this should understand that success comes with a price tag. Don’t believe in luck. It requires hard work and perseverance. No one accidentally wins. All you need is to plan, to be patient, and to be resilient. Stop associating with people of doubtful character. They will do you no good. Avoid rituals for fame. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Do not use your hands to put it off, and most importantly, do not give up.
